Governance and shareholder engagement

As an engaged shareholder, we expect companies to adopt best practices to fulfil their environmental, social and governance responsibilities. We see shareholder engagement as an important lever to encourage the adoption of practices that not only improve long-term financial returns, but create sustainable value.

Integrate ESG criteria into our investment analysis process

We integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into our overall analysis of each new, actively managed investment under consideration, whether it is part of a public equity, private equity or fixed income transaction.

To facilitate the process, we have established a team of responsible investment experts covering various industries. They collect and study data and information on ESG-related issues and assess their potential risk.

Hold upfront discussions with companies

We favour a collaborative approach with the companies in our portfolio. Each year, we engage them in discussions on issues of particular concern to us, including:

  • Compensation paid to executives and members of the Board of Directors
  • Social and environmental issues, including climate change and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Composition of the Board of Directors and its diversity
  • Election of directors
  • Share capital structure

These discussions are usually private and may involve other institutional investors concerned about specific situations.

#Exercise our voting rights

When we invest in a company, we expect it to be a good corporate citizen in all the communities in which it is active. With this in mind, we systematically exercise our voting rights at the shareholder meetings of companies in our portfolio, in both active and indexed management.
